Carlin’s Enaam Ahmed has secured an incredible 13th victory of the season to top off a sensational Championship winning campaign in the BRDC British Formula Three Championship. The British racer made the most of the final round of the season to end the year as he started it, by standing on the very top step of the podium. Team mate James Pull also enjoyed a successful weekend ending as Vice Championship at Donington following a third placed podium this morning; Pull finished the season this afternoon with a strong points paying finish in fifth to round off the year. However it was heartbreak this afternoon for Cameron Das who despite lining up on pole position finished the day in 13th after front wing damage and a trip to the pit lane.
Following a relatively uneventful second race of the weekend this morning, until the very final lap, Pull secured the Vice Championship after a strong fight to the podium which put him out of the clutches of those chasing and free to enjoy the final race of the season. The Vice Champion finished in third with Das in fourth and Ahmed sixth. Over the course of the race, Das also set the fastest lap of the weekend which ensured him pole position for the final race this afternoon; Ahmed set a lap to line up alongside in second and Pull in eighth.
For the final time this season the British F3 field lined up below the lights awaiting the concluding 20 minute race of the 2017 season. From his pole position starting slot American racer Das led the field away with a great launch however had Ahmed for close company as they headed off on the opening lap. As it was, Das held the lead well with Ahmed slotting in behind – meanwhile Pull had improved to sixth position by the end of lap one.
Over the next few laps Ahmed kept Das in sight with the newly–crowned 2017 Champion right behind and looking for a way past however Das continued to improve in his Carlin Tatuus-Cosworth car to pull a gap of over a second to his team mate. The pair continued to fight well at the front before Ahmed lunged at Das at the Melbourne hairpin to take the lead of the race. Further heartbreak followed just moments later for Das who suffered front wing damage after a further battle with Jordan Cane which brought him in to the pits and subsequently placed him down to 13th upon re-joining the circuit.
Over the next few laps the positions remained unchanged up and down the field with Ahmed up front clinching an incredible 13th victory of the BRDC British Formula Three Championship season. Vice Champion Pull ended the race in fifth with Das in 13th, and securing fifth overall in the standings, as the flag fell for the final time.
Speaking of the race Ahmed said, “It was a tough race out there today. I tried to overtake Cameron on the first lap but that didn’t work out so I just tried to keep with him from then on. Donington is a tough track to overtake on and I wasn’t able to make a move but I kept trying over the next few lasp and at the chicane I spotted my chance and went for it. It was the last race of the season so I gave it my all. I was happy with the win – 13 victories in one season is pretty awesome. I also want to say a big thanks to everyone at Carlin for believing in me all season.”
