Ahmed Heads Carlin 1-2 At Snetterton

Enaam Ahmed has continued his Championship campaign in style with his fifth victory of the season for Carlin at Snetterton in the BRDC British Formula Three Championship. Ahmed, who initially dropped back, fought to take the lead of the race and was joined on the podium by pole sitter and team mate James Pull to make it a Carlin 1-2. In a strong team effort Cameron Das rounded off the day with a solid sixth position.

As the lights went out pole sitter Pull launched well while Ahmed, who had been alongside, lost out to Toby Sowery and dropped back to third; Das meanwhile was running in seventh position on lap one. However things were soon to change as Ahmed began his fight back and sent his Carlin Tatuus-Cosworth Formula Three car down the inside of Sowery at the last corner to claim second place as his own.

As the cars streamed on the back straight, it was heartbreak for race leader Pull who found himself with a touch of understeer which saw him run wide and consequently lose the lead of the race to team mate Ahmed who was quick to capitalise and try to pull away.

However the race was naturalised soon after following a spin for Omar Ismail at the Esses which meant his car required recovering. This saw the safety car take to the Snetterton circuit for a couple of laps while the clean-up efforts took place by which point Das was running in sixth position.

With the clock ticking down, it was a relatively straight forward affair to the end of the race with the top positions remaining unchanged despite Ahmed extending his lead somewhat. As the chequered flag fell, it marked victory number five of the season for Championship leader Ahmed while Pull joined his team mate on the podium to make it a Carlin 1-2. Rockingham race winner Das finished the race in a strong sixth position.

Ahmed said of victory, “I didn’t really get a great start and Sowery was able to overtake me and I fell back to third. However at the last corner I sent it down the inside of him and got second place back. From there I caught James [Pull] and was able to take the lead when he made a mistake. The car has been mega all day, the team did a great job and we got fastest lap in the race too which all counts towards the third race – we’ve definitely been the dominant team this weekend. It’s the birthday weekend of two mechanics in the team as well– so this is for them!”

Pull added, “My start was actually pretty good and I had a battle with Toby [Sowery] but as I was going down the back straight I had a bit of understeer and made a mistake which sent me wide – leaving me open to Enaam [Ahmed]. It’s obviously disappointing and unlucky to not get the win today especially when the car has felt so great. We have good pace however so know we can come back strong tomorrow and see where we are.”
